In the building services industry, there is often a gap between the design office and the construction site. Throughout my career as a Mechanical Engineer, I have seen one truth remain constant: a high-quality design only succeeds if the consultant stays active during the construction phase.
The Reality of “First Contact”
We produce tender drawings with precision, but they rarely survive “first contact” with a live site. Designs are often finalised under tight deadlines with evolving information. By the time a contractor breaks ground, architectural layouts have shifted, structural constraints have appeared, and other services have moved.
What looked seamless on a screen can quickly become a complex puzzle of clashes and spatial constraints. This is where a project is won or lost. At AGLK, we don’t believe in “set and forget” engineering. We recognise that the construction phase is where the risk is highest, and where our support is needed most.

Construction programmes are leaner than ever. For a contractor, a three-day wait for an RFI response isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a disruption to trade sequencing, procurement, and the bottom line.

Because my experience spans complex sectors like Mission Critical and high-performance commercial assets, I look at these challenges through a multidisciplinary lens. It isn’t just about making the HVAC fit; it’s about ensuring the solution is buildable, compliant, and cost-effective.
Bridging the Gap through Active Engagement
The most successful projects share a common thread: active engagement. Being physically present on-site allows us to see spatial challenges firsthand and collaborate directly with the structural, electrical, and plumbing teams.
This builds a foundation of trust. When a contractor knows the engineer is proactive and accessible, issues are resolved in real-time before they become expensive variations. Engineering shouldn’t just be about compliance; it should be about performance. By giving construction coordination the same weight as the initial design, we ensure the final building performs exactly as intended – efficiently, reliably, and on schedule.
